Spirituality & altar building
SPIRITUALITY & ALTAR BUILDING
Developing a Consistent Spiritual Life, Building a Strong Prayer Altar & Establishing a Lifestyle of Worship, Prayer and Fellowship with God
Course Description
The Spirituality & Altar Building course is designed to help students understand the biblical meaning of spirituality, the significance of the altar throughout Scripture, and the importance of establishing a consistent personal and corporate relationship with God.
Throughout the Bible, altars are associated with worship, prayer, sacrifice, covenant, remembrance, thanksgiving, dedication, fellowship, and encounters with God. From the altars built by the patriarchs to the worship practices established in Israel and the spiritual principles revealed in the New Testament, the altar represents a significant biblical theme.
This course examines the altar not simply as a physical structure, but as a spiritual concept that points toward a person's devotion, worship, prayer, obedience, surrender, and relationship with God.
Students will learn how to develop a strong spiritual foundation and establish healthy spiritual disciplines that can help them grow in faith and maintain a consistent relationship with God.
The course emphasizes that altar building is ultimately about building a life that is continually surrendered to God, rather than merely creating a physical place or performing religious activities.
UNDERSTANDING SPIRITUALITY
The course begins by examining what biblical spirituality means.
Students will explore the difference between:
Religion and relationship
Spiritual activity and spiritual maturity
Emotion and faith
Knowledge and transformation
Public ministry and private devotion
Religious routine and genuine worship
Students will learn that spirituality involves the whole person and includes one's relationship with God, character, thoughts, actions, relationships, values, and daily choices.
The goal is to help students develop a spiritual life that extends beyond church services and ministry activities.
THE BIBLICAL MEANING OF AN ALTAR
Students will study the significance of altars throughout Scripture.
They will examine biblical examples of individuals who built or interacted with altars, including:
Noah

Prayer
Thanksgiving
Covenant
Dedication
Remembrance
Obedience
Communion with God

THE PERSONAL ALTAR
A major focus of this course is the concept of the personal spiritual altar.
Students will learn that a personal altar can represent a consistent place and pattern of devotion where a believer intentionally seeks God through prayer, Scripture, worship, reflection, and surrender.
This may include a specific physical place for prayer, but it is ultimately about establishing a consistent lifestyle of devotion.
Students will learn how to develop a personal spiritual routine that may include:
Daily prayer
Bible study
Worship
Thanksgiving
Repentance
Meditation on Scripture
Intercession
Quiet reflection
Journaling
Fasting where appropriate
Personal examination
The objective is to develop consistency rather than temporary spiritual enthusiasm.
BUILDING AN ALTAR OF PRAYER
Prayer is one of the foundational elements of spiritual life.
Students will explore different biblical dimensions of prayer, including:
Thanksgiving
Praise
Worship
Intercession
Petition
Confession
Repentance
Supplication
Listening
Spiritual reflection
Students will learn how to develop a sustainable prayer life rather than relying exclusively on emergency prayers during difficult circumstances.
The course will encourage students to establish regular times of prayer while remaining flexible enough to maintain a healthy and sustainable spiritual routine.
BUILDING AN ALTAR OF THE WORD
Scripture must remain central to spiritual development.
Students will learn how Bible study and prayer work together in developing a strong spiritual foundation.
The course will teach students how to:
Read Scripture consistently
Study biblical context
Meditate on Scripture
Memorize important passages
Apply biblical principles
Compare spiritual experiences with Scripture
Develop a personal Bible-study plan
Students will be reminded that spiritual experiences should not replace the study of God's written Word.
THE ALTAR OF WORSHIP
Worship is more than singing.
Students will explore biblical worship as a lifestyle of honoring God.
Worship may involve:
Praise
Music
Singing
Thanksgiving
Obedience
Service
Giving
Surrender
Holiness
Loving others
Living according to God's Word
Students will learn that worship should extend beyond a church service and become part of everyday life.
THE ALTAR OF SURRENDER
One of the central themes of altar building is surrender.
Students will examine what it means to place personal desires, ambitions, plans, fears, and priorities before God.
The course will explore questions such as:
What am I willing to surrender to God?
What areas of my life require greater obedience?
Am I seeking God only for what He can give me?
Is my spiritual life based on relationship or personal benefit?
Students will learn that spiritual maturity includes the willingness to surrender personal preferences when they conflict with biblical principles.
THE ALTAR OF SACRIFICE
The biblical concept of sacrifice will be studied carefully.
Students will explore how sacrifice is presented throughout Scripture and how New Testament teachings develop the concept of offering one's life to God.
The course will distinguish between biblical sacrifice and unhealthy religious practices.
Students will learn that spiritual discipline should not become a means of self-harm, manipulation, superstition, or attempting to purchase God's favor.
The emphasis will be on biblical devotion, obedience, generosity, service, and surrender.
ALTAR AND COVENANT
Students will examine the relationship between altars and covenant in biblical narratives.
They will study how certain altars functioned as places associated with significant commitments, remembrance, and relationships with God.
The course will help students understand the importance of faithfulness and keeping commitments.
Students will also examine how covenant themes develop through Scripture and how New Testament believers understand their relationship with God through Christ.
ALTAR AND REMEMBRANCE
Several biblical altars and memorials were connected with remembering what God had done.
Students will learn the importance of remembering God's faithfulness.
Practical exercises may include creating a personal record of:
Answered prayers
Important spiritual lessons
Biblical promises
Significant seasons
Personal growth
Moments of thanksgiving
Lessons learned through difficult circumstances
The purpose is to help students develop gratitude and recognize spiritual growth over time.
ALTAR AND FAMILY
The course will also explore the role of spiritual leadership within the family.
Students will study biblical examples and principles concerning family worship, prayer, teaching children Scripture, and establishing healthy spiritual practices within the home.
Students will be encouraged to consider ways families can develop simple practices such as:
Family prayer
Scripture reading
Thanksgiving
Worship
Bible discussions
Teaching children biblical values
The emphasis will be on creating healthy spiritual habits rather than imposing fear or religious pressure.
THE CORPORATE ALTAR
In addition to personal devotion, students will explore the importance of corporate worship and prayer.
The corporate altar can represent the gathered community seeking God together.
Students will study:
Corporate prayer
Church worship
Intercession
Fellowship
Communion
Service
Spiritual leadership
Unity
Encouragement
The course will emphasize that personal spirituality and participation in a faith community can complement one another.
REBUILDING A BROKEN ALTAR
Students will study biblical examples involving the restoration or rebuilding of altars.
One important example is Elijah's rebuilding of the altar described in 1 Kings 18.
This will be used to discuss the spiritual principle of restoration.
Students will explore what it can mean when someone's spiritual life becomes neglected and how they can begin rebuilding healthy spiritual practices.
Possible areas of restoration include:
Prayer
Scripture study
Worship
Fellowship
Service
Integrity
Obedience
Thanksgiving
The emphasis will be on restoration rather than condemnation.
MAINTAINING THE ALTAR
Building an altar is one thing.
Maintaining it is another.
Students will learn that spiritual consistency requires intentionality.
The course will examine common challenges such as:
Distractions
Busyness
Discouragement
Spiritual dryness
Inconsistency
Disappointment
Unanswered questions
Changing life circumstances
Students will learn practical strategies for maintaining a sustainable spiritual life during different seasons.
SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE
Students will explore healthy spiritual disciplines that can strengthen their relationship with God.
These may include:
Prayer
Bible Study
Worship
Fasting
Silence and Reflection
Journaling
Service
Fellowship
Giving
Confession and Repentance
The course will emphasize that spiritual disciplines are not ways of earning God's love.
They are practices that can help believers intentionally make space for prayer, reflection, obedience, and relationship with God.
FASTING AND THE SPIRITUAL LIFE
Where appropriate within the school's theological framework, students will study biblical examples of fasting.
The course will discuss:
Biblical purposes of fasting
Prayer and fasting
Humility
Seeking God
Repentance
Spiritual focus
Appropriate preparation
Healthy boundaries
Students will be taught that fasting should not become a competition or a means of proving spiritual superiority.
The focus is on seeking God with humility and wisdom.
DEALING WITH SPIRITUAL DRYNESS
Every believer may experience seasons when prayer feels difficult, motivation decreases, or spiritual enthusiasm changes.
Students will learn that spiritual maturity does not depend entirely on emotional feelings.
The course will address how to remain faithful during seasons when:
Prayer feels difficult
Answers seem delayed
Motivation is low
Circumstances are challenging
Spiritual excitement has decreased
Students will learn the importance of continuing healthy spiritual practices while also allowing room for honest questions, rest, reflection, and appropriate pastoral support.
ALTAR AND CHARACTER
A genuine spiritual life should affect character.
Students will examine how spiritual devotion should influence:
Honesty
Integrity
Patience
Self-control
Humility
Compassion
Forgiveness
Faithfulness
Service
Relationships
The course emphasizes that spending time in prayer should not be separated from how a person treats others.
Spirituality should produce transformation in everyday life.
ALTAR AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Students will also examine the relationship between spiritual devotion and spiritual gifts.
Prayer and altar building should not be used merely as a way to obtain supernatural experiences.
Students will learn that spiritual gifts should be exercised within a broader life of:
Prayer + Scripture + Character + Love + Service + Accountability
The altar is therefore not a place where someone comes simply to seek spiritual power.
It is a place of surrender and relationship with God.
AVOIDING SUPERSTITION AND UNHEALTHY PRACTICES
The course will carefully distinguish biblical altar building from practices that are based on superstition or manipulation.
Students will be taught not to treat physical objects, locations, numbers, rituals, or actions as magical mechanisms that automatically produce spiritual results.
The emphasis will remain on biblical faith and relationship with God.
Students will learn that Christian spirituality should not be based on fear, superstition, or attempts to manipulate God.
PRACTICAL ALTAR-BUILDING EXERCISES
Students will develop their own personal spiritual-development plan.
The plan may include:
Personal Prayer Schedule
Establishing consistent times for prayer.
Scripture Plan
Creating a realistic Bible-reading and study schedule.
Worship Practice
Developing personal and family worship practices.
Prayer Journal
Recording prayer requests, reflections, and answered prayers.

Spirituality & Altar Building is ultimately about developing a life that continually points toward God.
An altar is not merely a physical location.
It represents a heart that says:
“God, I belong to You.”
The goal of this course is not to teach students how to create impressive religious routines. It is to help them develop a consistent, meaningful, and biblically grounded spiritual life.
Students will learn that an effective spiritual life is built through daily choices:
PRAYING WHEN IT IS EASY.
PRAYING WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT.
STUDYING THE WORD.
WORSHIPPING GOD.
SURRENDERING PERSONAL DESIRES.
OBEYING BIBLICAL TRUTH.
SERVING OTHERS.
GIVING THANKS.
REPENTING WHEN NECESSARY.
REMAINING FAITHFUL THROUGH EVERY SEASON.
The ultimate altar is not simply something a person builds in a particular location.
It is the life that a person continually offers to God.
As students progress through this course, they will be encouraged to move from occasional spiritual activity toward a consistent lifestyle of prayer, worship, Scripture, obedience, service, and fellowship with God.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” — Romans 12:1
